In recent discussions of the DSpace 7 Entities Working Group (see notes from July 2, 2019), it was decided that Entities require some usage of a richer metadata schema (than DC or DCTerms). Specifically, for DSpace 7, out-of-the-box Entities will use a combination of Dublin Core (for core fields) and Schema.org for entity specific metadata. For example, the "Person" Entity will make use of some fields in Schema.org's "Person" schema: https://schema.org/Person
As part of these initial discussions, the suggestion was made that DSpace consider moving towards Schema.org in general (potentially even as a replacement for Dublin Core). However, this direction would require more significant changes/testing to the codebase, as several DC fields (like dc.title and possibly dc.date.accessioned) may be required for all Items.
This ticket is a placeholder for a future discussion around metadata schemas within DSpace, and whether we should continue to base internal metadata on DC or look to other options (like Schema.org). It is out-of-scope for DSpace 7, but might be considered for DSpace 8 or later.
In the meantime, initial feedback is welcome.
